FUBAR Tales
FUBAR 2.0 is an entertaining and funny journey as it visits the military’s absurd side, while also uncovering some shocking incidents. FUBAR moments can shape a person’s life; unraveling these events can help understand the soldier, sailor, marine, and airman. The book chronicles two years of FUBAR events that snake through induction, basic & infantry training, nuclear warhead security, deployment to Germany and to Vietnam.A Must Read to Understand the Military Experience
All military men and women experience FUBAR moments. See if you recognize affects of FUBAR moments in yourself, a loved one, or friend. The trick is cope with them, fix them, or use them to an advantage. Why 2.0?
World War II and Korea would have been FUBAR 1.0; the first wide spread use of the catchy term. The Vietnam era was 2.0. Iraq and Afghanistan would produce FUBAR 3.0. A veteran of those conflicts needs to write that book. Let us have some fun with 2.0; experience some groans and maybe learn something we can apply to real life in addition to expanding our understanding of the military, service men and women, and veterans.Fubar 20 A Soldier Insight into Military Chaos Gary W Clark 9780983578574 Books
This is a very funny, insightful book about military life. There is the right way, the wrong way, and the Army way. Get used to it, and try to use that knowledge to your advantage.I am reminded of the story of a co-worker from years ago. Collin didn't want to go into the service so he supplied the draft board with boxes of documents regarding his medical history. (Yes, I'm exaggerating.) He was assured that his knee injury was not enough to keep him out of the Army. About six months into Army life, he was told that he was being given a medical discharge because of his knee. He told me, "I begged them to let me stay in the Army because I wanted to make it my career. I'm no dummy. If I had shown how happy I was to be leaving, they would have made me stay!" Clearly Collin had mastered the ancient art of FUBAR. LOL

Fubar 20 A Soldier Insight into Military Chaos Gary W Clark 9780983578574 Books Reviews
Very well written . I am a 27 year Navy veteran but the problems are universal in all the services. FUBAR moments are every where so the trick is to accept them and try to see the humor in them. If you dwell on them, they'll make you nuts!
As an ex soldier myself I could relate to this book which in parts is really quite funny. I read it in one session, an easy read and I would recommend to all veterans.
Anyone who has spent time in the Armed Forces of the USA will recognize the FUBAR instances of their own time in the Service. Mr. Clark presents a wide variety of humorous situations from his time in Vietnam and Germany, as well as Boot Camp and AIT. As he states in the epilogue, not all FUBAR events are humorous. Some have serious consequences, sometimes fatal consequences. But they all seem to happen in the military more often. If you want a good chuckle, get this book. You won't regret it.
This was a great read, because it brought back many great memories from my tour of duty in the Army. I was rotating out of USAREUR at about the time Gary Clark was processing in to the Army. I remember Ft Polk well. The Army took it out of moth balls from WWII without changing a thing, and re-used it for Vietnam War inductees. It was a massive In-Processing and training area with what seemed like a million recruits there for BCT, AIT and "Tiger Land" - a mini Vietnam combat training zone.
This missive should be required reading for military recruits! This is right up there with the "hurry up and wait" post orders or " I can't hear you" admonitions of DI's! If it didn't come from the military, it isn't worth remembering. "Kilroy was here" has endured since the II World War! For every ridiculous action there is an even sillier reaction (author's opinion) and FUBAR is the military equivalent of the civilian, MURPHEY'S LAW! What a marvelous sense of humor we have been blessed with and can laugh at ourselves, thank God! Tate
I was in the Army about the same time as this story took place. I even took BCT at North Fort of Ft. Polk, LA. (Fart Puke)
Each and every story rings true, and bring back memories...lots of them. For example, while at Hq TASCOM in Germany, I couldn't make our half colonel leader nor his "airborne ranger/dagger in the teeth/if I can't kill I want to maim!) XO love me. Imagine that. They never submitted me for promotion to E-4. I was a PFC for so long that I became known as the PFCIC.
Like most who served, I wouldn't do it again for a million dollars and I wouldn't take a million dollars to do it again!
IF YOU ARE A VET...GET THIS BOOK!
This book is not realy as advertised. It is a set of circumstances the author experienced, set into a book format. These are normal isues faced by servicemen throughout the years, some of them unique to the Viet Nam era. This book has its humorous spots, but all-in-all pretty mundane.
He does do a few things that are pretty irritating in the book. As an example, he recounts military anacronyms from his perspective and not the true view someone would have as career military person. He takes his short experience and applies it too broadly in characterizing the Army. Not to say, his experiences are not valid, just to say his experience is may not be as universal as he lets on.
There are much better books on this topic.
